Ball Jointed Dolls are crafted from high-quality polyurethane resin—a beautiful, heavy, and smooth material that unfortunately possesses porous qualities. Proper handling and environmental control are absolutely vital to preserving your doll's color and structural integrity.

The Inevitability of Yellowing

The most common topic in BJD care is "yellowing." Polyurethane resin is highly reactive to Ultraviolet (UV) light and the oxygen in the environment. Over years, even pure white ("white skin") dolls will oxidize and take on a creamy, yellowish hue. "Normal skin" (peach/pink tones) may turn slightly orange or green, depending on the dye mixture used by the company. Yellowing is inevitable, but its progression can be drastically slowed down.

UV Protection

Direct sunlight is the primary enemy of resin. Never leave your BJD near an open window or outdoors for extended periods without protection. When displaying your dolls, ensure the room relies on LED lighting (which emits negligible UV radiation) rather than direct sunlight or fluorescent bulbs. Applying a UV-Cut sealant spray (like MSC UV-Cut) over the entire doll body provides a sacrificial layer that absorbs UV rays before they hit the resin.

Preventing Permanent Stains

Because resin is porous, dark dyes from doll clothing can easily bleed into the material, causing permanent stains that cannot simply be washed off.

  • Wash New Clothes: Always hand-wash new, dark-colored doll clothes in cold water with a little vinegar to set the dye. If the water turns dark, rinse repeatedly until it runs clear before dressing your doll.
  • Use Stain-Defense Bodysuits: For long-term display in dark clothing, invest in a sheer, white full-body silicone or fabric bodysuit ("mummy suit") that acts as a barrier between the fabric and the resin.

Cleaning and Stain Removal Techniques

Despite your best efforts, accidents happen. Here is how to clean different types of debris and stains.

1. General Cleaning

For surface dust and skin oils, use a magic eraser sponge (melamine foam) and plain tap water. Gently rub the affected area. Warning: Do not use magic erasers over painted faceups or body blushing, as the abrasive foam will instantly strip the paint and sealant off!

2. Deep Stain Removal

If dye has set into the resin, a magic eraser will not work. You must use an acne treatment cream containing 10% Benzoyl Peroxide (like Oxy10). Apply a thick layer of the cream exclusively to the stained area, wrap it in clear plastic wrap to prevent drying out, and place the piece under a warm light or indirect sunlight. The chemical reaction draws the stain out of the porous resin over a period of 24-48 hours. Wash off meticulously afterward. Again, never do this over painted faceups.
