Entering the world of Ball Jointed Dolls can feel like learning a new language. The most essential vocabulary to master involves doll sizes and scales. Because clothing, wigs, and eyes are scale-specific, purchasing the right size is crucial.
The Core BJD Scales
Modern BJD sizing terminology originated with Volks, the pioneering Japanese company that popularized the resin BJD hobby. While many companies now exist, they generally adhere to the "Super Dollfie" (SD) scale system established by Volks.
1/3 Scale: SD (Super Dollfie)
The 1/3 scale, commonly referred to as SD, represents the largest standard category of BJDs.
- Height range: 55cm to 65cm (22 to 26 inches). Some companies produce "70cm+" giants within this scale category.
- Characteristics: Highly detailed, mature, and anatomically realistic proportions. They command strong physical presence and excel in high-end couture fashion photography.
- Standard Accessories: 8-9 inch or 9-10 inch wigs, 14mm to 18mm eyes.
1/4 Scale: MSD (Mini Super Dollfie)
The 1/4 scale, universally known as MSD, represents the middle-ground and is extremely popular for its balance of size, detail, and affordability.
- Height range: 40cm to 45cm (16 to 18 inches).
- Characteristics: Proportions generally resemble young teenagers or slender anime characters. They are easier to transport and pose than massive 1/3 dolls, yet large enough to allow for intricate faceup detailing and elegant clothing construction.
- Standard Accessories: 7-8 inch wigs, 12mm to 14mm eyes.
1/6 Scale: YOSD (Yo-Super Dollfie)
The 1/6 scale, predominantly called YOSD, represents the child-proportioned category.
- Height range: 25cm to 30cm (10 to 12 inches).
- Characteristics: Typically sculpted with chubby, infantile, or highly stylized chibi aesthetics. They are highly portable, heavily favored for cute and whimsical themes, and fit into smaller display spaces comfortably.
- Standard Accessories: 6-7 inch wigs, 12mm to 14mm eyes.
Non-Standard and Micro Scales
Beyond the core three, the hobby has expanded to encompass extreme scales.
- 1/8 Scale and Smaller (Tiny/Micro): Ranging from 10cm to 20cm, these pocket-sized dolls often depict fairies or extreme chibi characters. Their engineering is impressive, but finding commercially produced clothing that fits perfectly can be challenging due to their minute proportions.
- Uncle/70cm+ Scale: A sub-category of 1/3, representing extremely tall, broad-shouldered male sculpts. They often require specialized "70cm" clothing, as standard SD male clothing will not fit over their broad chests or long limbs.
When purchasing for your doll, always prioritize the specific measurements (chest circumference, inseam, shoulder width) provided by the manufacturer rather than relying solely on the general scale category name.
